If you’ve driven on the CA-110 freeway through downtown L.A. anytime during the past five years, you likely saw the construction of new towers joining older ones throughout the downtown skyline. This ongoing building boom has set a new mark and taken the title of leader in new apartment construction in the country. According to a new report by ReantCafe, between 2017 and 2021, DTLA ranks as the nation’s top neighborhood when it comes to new apartment construction. According to the report, a total of 10,136 new rental units were completed over this time period. These units account for 39% of the total new hosing units in the city of Los Angeles.

DTLA beat-out the second-place finisher in this new rental unit construction race by a hefty margin. Midtown Atlanta added 5,936 new apartment units in the same time period.

Although the current building boom in Los Angeles is not like the one witnessed in the 1970s and 1980s, Downtown L.A. is not the only Los Angele neighborhood to make the list. The rise of streaming platforms seems to have rekindled interest in Hollywood over the last half-decade, and residential growth seems to have accompanied that interest. Hollywood was ranked 10th on the lists, adding 3,431 completed units between 2017 and 2021.
